Maplewood’s City Council voted to amend the 2040 comprehensive plan guidance for the parcel at 1300 McKnight Road, re‑guiding it from high‑density residential to employment.
Planner Ms. Parr told council the site’s rail adjacency and market conditions make high‑density residential less compatible and that planning‑commission input and two attendees at that hearing generally supported keeping it from residential use. "We believe it's consistent in relation to our comp plan and zoning as required by state law," Ms. Parr said, recommending approval.
Councilmembers asked whether the owner plans to market or lease the site; Ms. Parr said the owner has been talking to potential lessees and is open to selling but no sale was planned at this time. Councillors also asked about the meaning of the 'employment' designation; Ms. Parr and staff explained that it is a broad category that can include light industrial and employment centers designed to create job opportunities at higher intensity than neighborhood residential.
If approved locally, Ms. Parr said, the amendment will go next to the Met Council for review before final acceptance. The motion to amend was moved by Lee and seconded by Juneman and passed by voice vote.
