Council accepts 2024 annual reports from design review board and planning commission

The Maplewood City Council on Feb. 10 accepted annual reports from the Community Design Review Board (CDRB) and the Planning Commission summarizing 2024 activity.
Tom Osman, vice chair of the CDRB, said the board met six times and reviewed 10 items in 2024, noting Maplewood is roughly 95% developed so remaining work is mainly infill and redevelopment. Osman highlighted projects including a new carwash on Wiper Avenue, a multi‑tenant medical clinic, a planned Starbucks in the Birch Run Station parking lot and the CDRB’s review of Gladstone Village 2 (an approved 56‑unit multifamily project).
Dushar Desai, chair of the Planning Commission, reported seven meetings and 13 reviewed items in 2024, including three variance requests, seven conditional use permits and two zoning text amendments. Desai noted subdivision of the Bertrand Station parking lot into two parcels (one planned for Starbucks and the other for potential retail or a drive‑through) and that the commission assisted in updating the capital improvement plan and ordinances for reasonable accommodations and cannabis business review.
Councilmembers thanked board and commission members for their service. Motions to accept both reports were moved and seconded and carried by voice vote.
