Maplewood honors firefighters for lifesaving rescue in Nov. townhouse fire

Maplewood Mayor Abrams and the City Council on Jan. 27 presented meritorious service and lifesaving awards to four Maplewood Fire Department members for their actions during a Nov. 2, 2024 townhouse fire in Vadnais Heights that trapped multiple occupants.
Chief Mondor told the council the outcome was the result of coordinated automatic and mutual aid among Ramsey County fire departments and described how the first-arriving Maplewood crew — Fire Captain Paramedic Brad McGee and firefighter paramedics Emma Johnson, Nick Cook and Wendy Manka — entered a heavily smoking dwelling, located a 3-year-old and a 14-year-old and carried them to safety. "Their heroic actions save lives, and I've never been more proud to wear this uniform," Chief Mondor said.
Both children were transported to a local hospital and required lengthy stays but were discharged alive without long-term effects, Chief Mondor said. He presented the department’s meritorious service and lifesaving awards to McGee, Johnson, Cook and Manka and thanked council members for their continuing support of the fire department.
Council members, staff and the award recipients took photographs after the presentation and the city planned a reception for the honorees. The council resumed its regular agenda after the ceremony.
The account and the awards were presented to recognize the on-scene rescue and lifesaving medical interventions by Maplewood personnel during an incident that also involved mutual aid from neighboring departments.
