On Aug. 8 the Platte County School District #1 Board approved a suite of handbooks for staff, students, paraprofessionals and coaches. Board members said the changes were largely editorial but highlighted two substantive additions: an AI-usage matrix and an updated cell-phone expectation for staff and students.
Administrators explained the AI matrix ranges from "no AI usage" to "use as a reference" and describes when students may reference generative tools and when using them would constitute academic dishonesty. Staff said teachers were trained on the matrix this week and that the matrix will be included or linked in each handbook so that behavior consequences and expectations are easier to locate.
Board members debated whether staff, students or parents should be required to sign a formal acknowledgement that they received and read the handbook. No uniform mandatory-signature policy was adopted; board members suggested building principals manage acknowledgements locally and that some electronic acknowledgement could be added to the district's safety-training tools.
Principals will present the handbook changes to students during orientations and at early-year assemblies; staff were asked to ensure behavior matrices are accessible in the handbooks so that consequences are clear and consistent across buildings.
