Board deadlocks on superintendent contract addendum after amendment attempt fails

After an executive session to discuss the superintendent’s contract, the board debated and voted on a proposed contract addendum that would have adjusted salary and benefits. Speaker 5 moved to approve the superintendent contract addendum for salary and benefits; Speaker 3 proposed a modification limiting a proposed increase to a 2% raise to base pay plus five flex days to be used in June and July and striking additional vacation days. The amendment was put to a vote and failed on a tie. The original motion — read on the floor as a 2% base increase, three additional vacation days and 10 flex remote days during June and/or July — subsequently failed on a 3–3 vote.
Board chair Speaker 1 emphasized the vote was not a reflection of performance: “There is nothing wrong with Mister Weigel's performance. We're very pleased with your performance,” the chair said during discussion. Trustees expressed frustration about timing and attendance; several members urged the board to revisit the issue at a future meeting and to address member attendance before deciding compensation changes.
Because the motion failed on a tie, no contract addendum was approved; board members indicated they will place the matter back on a future agenda to resolve outstanding issues, including absences and clearer advance notice of proposed contract language.
