Grafton schools outline FY27 budget timeline and correct circuit-breaker estimate

The Grafton School Committee received an early look at the FY27 budget timeline and a correction to a state-aid estimate at Wednesday—s meeting.
Staff reported a preliminary forecast showing roughly a 6.5% increase for FY27. The district aims to provide the FY27 budget book to committee members by Dec. 3 and finish the town—s five-year forecast after town numbers are merged; Rothwell said the district—s forecast will be completed by Nov. 20.
Rothwell also acknowledged an error in a circuit-breaker estimate prepared by Kathleen (district finance staff): an entry that appeared as a negative $64,089 should have been shown as a positive $64,089. "She had listed or put our expected it was an estimate, but really just a guess ... it should have been plus 64,089," Rothwell said, adding that a recent student move-in has further affected the estimate.
Committee members discussed coordinating a joint meeting with the select board and asked that the committee have access to the superintendent—s budget before the joint session so members can prepare focused questions. A budget-focused committee meeting is slated for Dec. 9 to devote a large portion of the agenda to FY27.
No budget votes were taken at the meeting; staff set a schedule for continued review and meetings with town officials.
