Gautier council adopts ordinance increasing mayor and council pay despite resident objections

The Gautier City Council on Sept. 16 adopted an ordinance to set salaries for the mayor and city council members after a brief public comment period in which a resident called the timing "in poor taste."
Adam College, who identified himself during public comment, urged the council to wait and review the city's financial position before approving what he called a 20% increase. "It's kinda in poor taste to be asking for a 20% increase for a council that's been in session for less than 3 months," he said, noting recent budget increases and staff turnover.
City Manager Miss Shanksy said the ordinance was presented in accordance with budget law processes and salary-study recommendations: "This is in accordance with our budget law session where y'all expressed an interest in doing this," she said. Council discussion included members who cautioned about raises and others who said the city's pay was below comparable cities.
A motion by Councilman Minor, seconded by Councilman Fuller, carried. The meeting record shows opposition during the roll-call exchange; council recorded the motion as carried after the votes were tallied.
The ordinance's effective date and the exact salary amounts were contained in the packet presented at the meeting; the council authorized the change at this session.
