County officials approved two new constitutional-office positions on Aug. 5 after the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office explained statutory changes will substantially increase workload.
Representatives said the state compensation board awarded positions for an assistant commonwealth’s attorney and a deputy clerk to address duties created by new sealing and expungement statutes effective July 1. The compensation board will reimburse portions of the salaries, but the county will fund fringe‑benefit costs. Staff presented a consolidated estimate of personnel and fringe costs and noted the county’s portion is required if the county accepts the positions and accompanying reimbursements.
Supervisors discussed the reimbursement schedule and whether the compensation board’s funding stream is likely to continue; county counsel and the Commonwealth’s Attorney advised the board that accepting the positions allows the county to meet statutory workload increases while receiving partial state reimbursement. The board approved the positions by roll call.
