Planning commission unanimously recommends approval of Burtville 175‑foot monopole to supervisors

The King George County Planning Commission voted unanimously to forward Telecom Capital Group’s application for a 175‑foot monopole telecommunications facility at 5520 Saint Paul’s Road to the Board of Supervisors with a recommendation for approval.
Staff told the panel the site was chosen to fill gaps in coverage and that the proposal meets King George zoning performance standards and required setbacks. "The proposed tower is in a location that currently is lacking in service and will provide vital communication for fire and emergency service," staff said during the presentation.
Telecom Capital Group described an earlier balloon test, outreach to adjacent landowners and a reduced tower height after community feedback; the monopole would have a 4‑foot lightning rod for an overall height of 179 feet and design features intended to reduce visual impact, including a graduated brown‑to‑sky‑blue paint scheme. Company representatives also said Verizon would place equipment at approximately 170 feet, leaving capacity for two additional carriers.
No members of the public registered to speak during the public hearing. Commissioners questioned the applicant about neighborhood outreach and DoD/NSWC awareness; a Saint Paul's trustee in the room told the commission the congregation supports the project. Commissioners and staff said the application went through the FAA "no hazard" process and that the county measures setbacks from the outside of the compound as permitted under county rules.
Commissioner (speaker 9) moved to adopt resolution PC‑15‑25 and to forward the application to the Board of Supervisors with a recommendation for approval and a finding the project is in substantial accord with the comprehensive plan. After a roll‑call vote the motion carried unanimously: Kendrick, Myers, Palavoto, Maffet, Flatley, Fox, Nicely and Chair Williams voted aye.
The Board of Supervisors will receive the commission’s recommendation and will consider the special‑exception permit at a future meeting.
