Board approves scouting partnership, grants, personnel hires, purchases and several contract actions

At its public meeting the Buchanan County Public Schools board approved a series of motions covering partnerships, grants, personnel and operational purchases.
The board granted formal approval for a partnership between the Boys & Girls Club of Central Appalachia and Scouting America to reestablish scouting units in the county, allowing the organizations to use school facilities and, at times, district transportation; the Boys & Girls Club said it will cover registration and materials for new scouts for one year. A motion to approve the partnership was made and seconded; the board instructed administration to work out implementation details and contract terms with staff.
The district accepted a community school development grant that will fund mental-health providers, STEM activities in middle schools, and college and career exploration for high-school students. The board authorized contracting for services (no vendors named) and agreed to advertise for providers where appropriate.
Several previously held poll votes and purchases were ratified: adding two light poles and lighting at Twin Valley High School’s football field, purchase of a breaker for the welding class (approximately $4,000), and a lightning-protection item at Southern Gap High School (budgeted). The board approved a purchase order amendment for athletic uniforms (home and away, JV and varsity) after discussing bids; the upper estimate discussed in the meeting was less than $140,000.
The board also approved a memorandum of understanding to serve meals at Mimic Early Head Start, accepted a garden grant agreement covering multiple schools, and authorized early-dismissal dates and homecoming schedules for several schools. Personnel items approved included committee-recommended hires for instructional and paraprofessional roles.
After an executive (closed) session, the board certified the closed session and approved a $900 payment to Amber McClanahan for band staffing so a female representative would be present. The board also approved an adjustment to Dwayne Hurley’s contract and authorized two easements (subject to legal review) tied to right-of-way and electrical services.
Board members generally expressed support for the motions; where the transcript records explicit roll-call style affirmations it shows multiple individual "Yes" responses. Several motions were noted as subject to legal review and administration follow-up before implementation.
