Operations update: Poquoson schools report 55 instructional vacancies filled, HVAC and safety projects near completion

Operations director Mr. Roberts told the board Aug. 19 that the division faced 55 instructional vacancies over the hiring season and has covered 54 of those positions, with 36 filled by new teachers and eight by returning staff.
"Please announce that we've had 55 vacancies and that could be anywhere from a transfer or retiree," Mr. Roberts said, adding that nearly all positions are filled. He reported facility projects are on track: the high-school HVAC replacement is in final punch-list stages, floor and office improvements are complete or nearly complete, trailers at an elementary school are prepared for removal and fire-alarm work finished over the summer.
On transportation, Roberts said 13 bus drivers are in place, one remaining to hire, and routes are posted; a parent-facing bus tracker app will launch Sept. 1 with follow-up communications via ParentSquare. Bus Patrol camera installations are under negotiation. Safety items ordered include stop-the-bleed kits and mobile evacuation chairs; the district received state grant-funded open-gate systems to rotate among schools. Mr. Roberts said playground inspection recommendations will guide a new playground-replacement committee to research funding and priorities.
The board had follow-up questions about driver counts and policy formatting; staff said they will provide clarification where requested. No formal board action was taken on these operational items at the meeting.
