Poquoson schools expand dual-enrollment offerings; 158 students enrolled through VCC

Poquoson City Public Schools (PCPS) told the board Aug. 19 that a developed College Now partnership with Virginia Peninsula Community College will let qualified students earn dual-enrollment credits on the high-school campus, online or at the college.
"PCPS now has a fully developed plan that allows qualified students to earn dual enrollment credits in the way that best fits their needs," said Miss Idd during the presentation, noting 158 enrollments through Virginia Peninsula Community College. She said additional students take dual-enrollment courses through Virtual Virginia, New Horizons and other programs, and staff plan a fuller fall briefing on accelerated and advanced coursework.
The presentation referenced House Bill 1087, which requires each school board to offer qualified students access to dual-enrollment courses sufficient to complete the Passport or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies. District staff said the 158 figure covers students enrolled via VCC only; questions about the percentage of eligible students and total eligible population were noted as follow-ups. The board did not take formal action on the College Now item at the meeting and asked staff to return with more detailed enrollment and eligibility breakdowns.
