Buchanan County School Board holds organizational meeting, elects officers and approves routine business

At its Jan. 14, 2025 organizational meeting the Buchanan County School Board elected officers, appointed a clerk, adopted Robert’s Rules, set meeting schedules and committees, accepted a Parent Resource Center grant, approved personnel items and several construction-related motions including donor-funded brickwork.
The Buchanan County School Board convened its annual organizational meeting Jan. 14, 2025, to elect officers, adopt meeting procedures and handle routine district business.
Board members nominated and voted on officers for the year during the organizational portion of the meeting. A clerk appointment motion was made to appoint Tanya; members discussed setting the clerk’s pay and noted last year’s rate was $500 per month. The board adopted Robert’s Rules for conducting meetings and reaffirmed that special meetings may be called by the chairman or by two members. Board members discussed and recorded the IRS mileage reimbursement rate ($0.70 per mile) to apply for travel reimbursement.
Committee rosters were set: the budget committee, salary committee, safety, transportation, nutrition and personnel assignments were announced and members volunteered for specific roles. The board approved routine personnel actions, accepted listed resignations, and approved the certification for Hannah Boyd, who was reported to have completed certification paperwork for a Grundy High School English-teacher position.
On finance and capital items, the board moved to approve payables with the exception of Southern Gap-related payables. Members discussed a bid for a brick entryway to the new school and a funding letter purported to cover the cost, naming Suncoke as a donor; an amount of $84,000 was cited as covering the brick entrywork. The board also approved a contractor change-order presented as a net credit (recorded in the meeting transcript in the contractor’s phrasing) and approved a property amendment related to land across from Twin Valley Elementary, contingent on legal sign-off.
The board accepted notification of a Parent Resource Center grant that requires no local match and approved motions to request 55 middle-school football helmets for the county’s combined teams. District enrollment was reported at 2,204 students, down 12 from the prior month. Members set the next meeting for Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. and adjourned.
Actions taken at the meeting included officer elections and appointments, adoption of meeting rules, committee assignments, approval of personnel and grant acceptance, and several construction and procurement approvals. Several approvals were conditional on legal review or documentation being finalized.
