District officials report measurable summer learning gains, expand STEM and robotics offerings

Helen Montgomery, assistant principal at Goochland Middle School, summarized the middle-school remediation program and shared assessment outcomes: average math pre-test 37.8% to post-test 66.1% (a 28 percentage-point increase) and English pre-test 47.8% to post-test 75% (27.2 percentage-point increase). Montgomery and other staff said the programs used scaffolded instruction, think-aloud modeling, and game-based learning to boost student skills.
At the high school, assistant principal Liz Koiner reported 20 students passed SOL retakes after a week-long remediation session and 13 students earned course credit through a four-week credit-recovery program. Staff also highlighted enrichment camps (fine arts, STEM) and a robotics program that grew from roughly 10 participants last year to about 30 now, prompting plans for an additional FTC/robotics team.
Board members praised staff and noted the potential to link summer internships and work-based learning to teacher-academy initiatives. Staff also said summer programming demonstrated both academic and social-emotional benefits and would inform planning for the coming school year.
