County staff urged eligible homeowners to sign up online beginning Oct. 1 to claim a 25% homeowner discount that will apply to 2026 property taxes and explained outreach plans to assist residents.
Paul, speaking for county staff, said the discount will not be applied automatically this year and residents must complete an online form and verify they reside in the home for at least eight months. Paul said the online sign-up window is Oct. 1–Feb. 2 and that the long-term homeowner affidavit program runs Oct. 1 through the fourth Monday in May; he noted the differing time windows create confusion. Paul said county staff will distribute posters and flyers around the courthouse, provide QR codes and set up computers to help residents sign up online; last year 2,330 long-term homeowners came into the office in person and staff expect a much larger online turnout this season.
A commissioner asked when the flyers would be ready and Paul said the goal is to have materials finished and distributed by the end of the week. Commissioners discussed whether statutory date changes would be necessary to better align sign-up deadlines with county budgeting timelines.
