Resident urges council to reconsider proposed Hyde Park firehouse, citing trees and traffic

St. Joseph — After the council adjourned, Warren Ingram III addressed elected officials to urge reconsideration of a proposed new firehouse location on Hyde Park Avenue in the city’s South End. Ingram said the Hyde Park site would require removing up to five trees, relocating a Chief White Cloud teepee and moving a trail and flower beds, and that traffic conditions on Hyde Park make access and backing maneuvers for emergency vehicles hazardous.
Ingram urged the council to consider the King Hill site as an alternative, noting it is about five blocks north and argued the slightly longer response time would be acceptable compared with the loss of parkway landscaping and old-growth trees. He asked the council not to choose a location primarily because it is cheaper for the city to acquire and to “please don’t be cheap.”
The mayor permitted the late comment after adjournment; the council did not take immediate action on the matter during the meeting and did not vote on the location while Ingram’s concerns were recorded on the public record.
