At the St. Joseph City Council meeting during public comment, resident Bonnie Canchola urged the council to add a sun shelter at the park at 20 Eighth and Southwest Parkway, adjacent to Phil Welch Stadium. Canchola, who identified her address as 1070 Crestview Lane, said the park has benches and bike racks but lacks a shade structure and that people "sit off to the west, maybe under a tree to rest or park their bikes" because there is no covering. She said, "It is the only place in our whole park system that does not have a sun shelter." The council referred her request to the city manager and the park director for follow-up.
Another resident thanked St. Joseph police and fire personnel for acting as an honor guard at a veterans program at Word of Life and thanked City Manager Mike Shoemaker and Mayor John Josendale for their roles in welcoming home Vietnam veterans.
No formal council action or funding decision on the park shelter was recorded at the meeting; the matter was referred to staff for consideration.
