Senate Education Committee hears sponsor testimony backing Buckeye Boys and Girls State resolution

A sponsor testifier told the committee the American Legion Buckeye Boys State was founded in 1936 and described it as “one of the largest and most impactful educational leadership programs in the country,” noting that “each year, over 1,200 young men from nearly 600 schools across the Buckeye State gather for an immersive eight-day experience to learn the workings of city, county and state government.” A second testifier described Buckeye Girls State, founded in 1946, and said delegates participate in workshops, legislative sessions, campaigning, debating and voting.
The testifiers emphasized the programs’ nonpartisan focus on civic engagement and leadership development and said students from public, private and home-school backgrounds are eligible. One sponsor said, “I respectfully urge this committee to join me in supporting HCR number 7” and asked members for favorable consideration.
Chair remarks and committee discussion produced no questions from members, and the chair closed the first hearing on HCR 7. No committee vote was taken on the resolution during this session; the record shows the item concluded after testimony and will remain at its current procedural stage.
