PETERSBURG, Va. — Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Shabika Lang presented a school-by-school vacancy report at the Sept. 3 Petersburg City Public Schools Board meeting.
Lang said the data reflected vacancies as of Aug. 29, 2025, and varied by campus: examples cited included multiple core- and special-education vacancies at some elementary sites and several vacancies at Pittman Academy. She told the board that overall the district had filled 86% of classrooms with a mix of fully licensed, provisionally licensed and resident teachers and that partnership efforts with university instructors had identified candidates for about 15 positions.
Board members pressed for more detail on how vacancies will be reported and tracked, asked how often recruitment information should appear in work sessions, and requested a future breakdown showing how many summer participants promoted to the next grade level. Administrators said the early-school-year reporting cadence was designed to give the board a full snapshot at the beginning of the year and that recruitment and retention work would be discussed again in December and in work sessions.
