The Accomack County School Board on Aug. 19 approved a set of routine items on its agenda, including the minutes of the Aug. 5 meeting, budget transfers, vouchers and an updated staff handbook that removes an absolute ban on hiring relatives of board members.
Board members voted to approve the minutes and carried motions to accept budget transfers and vouchers after staff said a few small, late invoices dated to June required adjustment. The board also approved the personnel list as presented and carried a motion to table readmission case number O8192501 to the September meeting at the request of the parties involved.
During the handbook discussion, a board member raised concern that a sentence barring relatives of board members and the superintendent from employment with ACPS conflicted with guidance allowing employment so long as the board member certifies no involvement in the hiring decision and the superintendent certifies the hire is based on merit. Staff confirmed they would strike the absolute prohibition and the board voted to approve the staff handbook as amended to prohibit direct supervision conflicts rather than preclude hiring altogether.
Chair permitted Miss Bowman to participate remotely after she cited a personal matter and poor road conditions; the board approved that request by motion. The board also named delegates to the Virginia School Boards Association conference, appointing Malcolm as delegate and Ed Taylor as alternate.
The meeting concluded after a short public comment period. A motion to adjourn carried and the chair reminded attendees to drive safely.
