Committee holds first hearing on naming Interstate 90 bridge for Specialist Ashton

Representative Troy described Ashton's military decorations and community ties: "he received... the army commendation medal with sea device, the national defense service medal, inherent resolve campaign medal, global war on terrorism service medal, and the combat infantry badge." Troy said Ashton was murdered in his barracks at Fort Drum in Upstate New York and that the family has been consulted and is watching the hearing from home.
Representative Shroy, whose district includes the area near the proposed bridge, urged positive consideration, noting the bridge's proximity to places Ashton frequented in high school and calling the location fitting for a memorial. The sponsors told the committee they discussed a possible amendment with the family and that the family supports the change.
Chairman Patton expressed condolences and said the committee will handle the matter at the next hearing. The committee concluded the first hearing on House Bill 27.
