Water-main replacement crew reports roughly 2,000 feet replaced this year; O'Fallon Avenue work to extend into 2026

Scott Brennan, water main replacement supervisor, updated the Public Works Advisory Committee on June 25 on the city's in-house main replacement program.
Brennan said the program began in 2018 and highlighted recent neighborhood work (Hilltop, Country Life, Vine) and an interconnection on Thornberry with a 12-inch main installed in 2023. He reported the crew had replaced roughly "about 2,000 feet this year already" and that in 2024 the program replaced 5,780 feet. He said the crew averages approximately 25–26 valves and about 10 hydrants installed per year to meet DNR standards.
Brennan said the current focus is the Cortez and O'Fallon Avenue area; he identified those mains as mid-1950s vintage and said replacements there will continue through the end of this year and into late 2026 before shifting to Third Street. He also described the city's in-house restoration crew (started in 2021) that handles driveways, curb and pavement repairs to speed reopenings after pipe work and avoid long waits for contractors.
Committee members asked about the age of the pipes in the Cortez area. Brennan and another committee member confirmed some mains date to the mid-1950s and said they are "way overdue" for replacement. No formal action was taken; the committee accepted the informational update.
