At the Historic Preservation Commission meeting on June 3, the chair asked commissioners to monitor two items scheduled for Planning & Zoning review this week.
The first involves 311 South Main, where an application proposes dividing the lot that includes the building housing Bowman's Bank and the Bank of America branch. The chair told commissioners that the building contains the original O'Fallon Bank interior and cautioned members to watch Planning & Zoning materials and project activity to ensure the building's historic features are not removed: “I just wanna put that out there and that you start to see anything what’s going between planning and zoning that they're not supposed to tear that any of that down,” the chair said.
The second item concerns 811 Tom Geneva, an older house that developers propose preserving and converting to office space associated with a forthcoming apartment project. The chair said the project is intended to keep the existing historic house rather than demolish it.
Commissioners were asked to monitor both applications and to be prepared to raise preservation concerns if proposals affecting character‑defining features or original fabric are submitted for review by Planning & Zoning.
