Chair Claggett opened the House Technology and Innovation Committee with a broad warning about the pace and implications of artificial intelligence.
"According to Forbes, major tech companies have eliminated 77,000 positions in 2025 as AI takes over the roles in coding, customer service and data entry," the chair said, urging members to consider the workforce and legal consequences. He highlighted risks from mixing AI models across vendors, the growth of multi-step "agentic" systems that can act on users' behalf, and the threat posed when generative systems fabricate case law or other authoritative materials.
Claggett said those developments complicate lawmakers' work: "When you start mixing the models of different developers, now you have a situation where... even if what we say is true and we put that in law, how do you do that?" He also pointed to tech investments in Central Ohio, citing Intel and Nvidia activity as context for the committee's agenda.
The chair closed by reminding members that five bills are currently in committee and that material on those measures was provided on legislators' iPads for review.
The committee then moved to scheduled bill hearings for the day.
