Charlotte County adopts floodplain ordinance to preserve residents’ NFIP eligibility

The Charlotte County Board of Supervisors adopted a floodplain ordinance intended to bring local regulations into compliance with FEMA map updates and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Staff (Miss Elder) told the board FEMA had notified staff of updates to floodplain maps and the county needed an ordinance consistent with NFIP minimum standards so residents could remain eligible for flood insurance. The draft, based on a model ordinance provided by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, would be incorporated into chapter 42 of the county code and designates the building official as the floodplain administrator. Staff recommended approval to ensure compliance with FEMA’s September 19 deadline.
With no public comment, the board adopted the ordinance by roll-call vote.
