Hardee County School Board adopts FY 2025–26 budget and sets millage at 5.252 mills

The Hardee County School Board unanimously adopted millage rates and the district’s fiscal year 2025–26 budget during a Sept. 8 public hearing and regular meeting. The board set the required local effort at 3.004 mills, the discretionary operating rate at 0.748 mills and the capital outlay rate at 1.5 mills, totaling 5.252 mills.
At the start of the hearing, the presiding speaker said, “The proposed millage rates represent a 16.33% increase in millage from the old rollback rate,” and noted taxable property values in the county rose by more than $545,000,000 (about 17.72%) to over $3,600,000,000, which affected revenue projections. The board said the discretionary and capital outlay rates did not change and that the proposed millage and proposed FY 2025–26 budget had been advertised in the Herald Advocate on July 24, 2025 and tentatively approved by the board on July 28, 2025.
Board members moved through a sequence of related motions during the hearing. Doctor Sharp moved to adopt the resolution determining revenues and millages for FY 2025–26 (item 2.02); Miss Cornell seconded, and the board voted individually and recorded four ‘aye’ votes to pass the measure. Miss Cornell then moved to adopt the district summary as the original budget for FY 2025–26 (item 2.03); Doctor Sharp seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The board accepted the proposed uses of the capital outlay tax summarized on the attached notice (item 2.04) after a motion by Doctor Sharp and second by Miss Cornell. Finally, the board adopted the final FY 2025–26 budget (item 2.05) on a motion by Doctor Sharp, seconded by Mister Smith; the motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
The board noted certifications and compliance documents as information only and adjourned the budget hearing at 5:10 p.m. The regular meeting resumed at 5:11 p.m. and the presiding speaker confirmed Mister Smith was attending virtually and Miss Dasher was absent.
