Coach warns of heat risks; board hears plan for wet-bulb monitoring, turf and covered athletic space

Coach Darren Bryant told the Hardee County School Board that heat-related illness is a growing risk for student athletes and described the district’s current mitigation practices and facility needs.
Bryant explained wet-bulb globe temperature thresholds used by governing athletic bodies and described how those thresholds require frequent water breaks, shaded rest, and, at high readings, indoor practice. He said his team has used shade tents, frequent hydration, ice immersion for cooling, and an indoor field when wet-bulb readings exceed limits. Bryant reported conflicting instrument readings in direct sun versus shade and urged installation of an official wet-bulb sensor at the stadium; he said the district is on a county grant list to receive a wet-bulb unit next year.
The coach outlined a range of facility options. A fully covered practice facility was discussed but estimated at around $1.2 million, a figure he called likely too large for the district alone; portable turf and improvements to an existing indoor area were offered as multipurpose, lower-cost alternatives. He also said the district lacks a dedicated athletic trainer and suggested exploring a Career and Technical Education pathway tied to athletic training to build capacity.
Board members thanked Bryant for the presentation. One member noted a donation from the Hardee Athletic Foundation toward turf and praised community partners for supporting heat-mitigation efforts. The presentation led to follow-up items: placement on the county wet-bulb grant list, continued maintenance and scheduling attention for fields, and conversations about fundraising and partnerships to reduce cost burdens on the district.
Board members also discussed game-time rules versus practice rules (different governing bodies may apply) and agreed to keep heat-safety measures under review; no formal policy change was adopted at the meeting.
