School Board directs district to develop AI guidance for classrooms

The Miami-Dade County School Board voted Aug. 12 to direct the superintendent to develop districtwide guidance on artificial intelligence (AI) for schools.
Board Member Alonzo, sponsor of item H4, framed the measure as a proactive step to balance innovation and responsibility: "As AI is rapidly reshaping education... we need to provide clear expectations for their use within the classroom," he said. The item asks district staff to propose a tiered framework that defines permitted uses ranging from no use to full integration and to recommend changes to discipline codes or procedures if necessary.
Public testimony emphasized teacher involvement and training. Mindy Grimes Festige (United Teachers of Dade) said a clear policy is essential to protect staff from being "scapegoated" for district-level technology decisions and to define responsibilities for monitoring and response. Miriam Wedderburn, a classroom teacher, urged that policies be practical and include family-facing resources so parents understand how AI will be used.
District staff and the sponsoring member said the policy will align with federal guidance and recent federal initiatives on AI in education and will involve educator input, training and communications for families. The board approved the motion by voice vote and expects the superintendent to return with a draft framework for board review.
