Palm Beach County School Board proclaims Aug. 21 as Fentanyl Awareness and Education Day

The Palm Beach County School Board unanimously voted to proclaim Aug. 21, 2025, as Fentanyl Awareness and Education Day, the board said during its regular meeting in West Palm Beach.
Superintendent Michael Burke recommended the proclamation, noting that the Florida Department of Education designated the date as the state’s first Fentanyl Awareness and Education Day. The board moved the proclamation forward on a motion by Miss Branch with a second by Miss Whitfield; the vote carried unanimously.
Miss Whitfield read the proclamation text, saying in part, “Proclamation Fentanyl Awareness and Education Day, 08/21/2025,” and stressing the goal of increasing awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and the availability of prevention resources for young people. Burke told the board that even very small amounts of fentanyl can be fatal and reassured families that school clinics and school police officers are equipped with Narcan.
Alex Price of Project Overdose was invited to the dais for a photo with board members. Chair Brill and communications staff said the district would follow the proclamation with recognitions and community outreach tied to the education objectives.
The proclamation passed with no opposition. The board’s action directs the superintendent and staff to proceed with the recognition and related outreach described in the proclamation.
