County transportation official outlines demolition program; website planned to track projects

At the St. Louis County Council meeting on Aug. 26, the Department of Transportation and Public Works presented its monthly update on the Grama Demolition Program, describing current work and plans to publish a public-facing project tracker.
Director Stephanie Streeter told the council a contractor is actively removing five properties, about 27 properties are packaged as bids in procurement, and 15 parcels previously in identification have entered the ordinance hearing process. She described the hearing phase as an 8–9 month process involving title research, public notice, owner contact, hearings and appeal opportunities before demolition can proceed.
Streeter said the program is working from a larger inventory of roughly 2,000 vacant properties countywide; given the multistep process, staff expect the program could result in the demolition of approximately 234 properties over time, contingent on clearing title, completing hearings and resolving appeals. She characterized movement of properties from 'stage 1' into hearings as a positive step toward removals.
To improve transparency, Streeter said the department has drafted a public website and is partnering with Performance Management and Budget to deliver the content via Tableau. Staff expect to begin implementation at the end of the week and aim to demo the site at the September council meeting so council members and the public can check project status on demand.
Council members asked for a demonstration and the timeline for the site; Streeter said the site should be available for review closer to the next meeting. No vote or budget appropriation on the program was recorded at this meeting.
