County executive reports shelter overcrowding, land bank launch and hate-crime investigation

County Executive (speaker at the Aug. 5 meeting) told the council that the county is actively seeking temporary headquarters while a long-term building solution is developed, and briefed members on several operational items.
He said the animal shelter population was 352 animals and described efforts to increase adoptions and expedite donations of medicine, food and kennels to staff. He also noted an interagency RECA stakeholders meeting with community organizations and a senator's office and said staff are building a web page to help residents request records from the Department of Revenue and the Department of Health.
The county executive reported the newly formed land bank has begun meeting and will fill two remaining seats by the end of the week to pursue redevelopment of neglected properties. He also told the council that Clayton police are investigating three car fires with anti-Semitic graffiti and said the county stands with local Jewish organizations condemning the acts.
The executive concluded by thanking the parks department for a 75th-anniversary celebration at Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex that drew more than 500 attendees.
Next steps: Council staff were directed to prepare appropriate legislation related to the 2050 comprehensive planning matter and other items discussed; departmental follow-up on donation procedures and a records-access web page were described as in progress.
