County transportation staff updates council on demolition program, procurement pipeline

St. Louis County Transportation & Public Works provided the council a status update on the county’s demolition program during the July 22 meeting.
Joe, a representative of the Department of Transportation and Public Works, told the council the program—enacted in April 2025 and funded initially with $11,000,000 in ARPA dollars that were later defederalized—has five parcels awarded and a contractor working through permitting to remove those structures. He said 27 properties are in the procurement pipeline, with 17 bids scheduled to open Aug. 19 and another 10 properties to be bid soon. Joe said the department has identified roughly 196 properties on its list and estimated about $4.5 million in property‑removal value tied to the current set of parcels.
Council members had asked for a public dashboard. Joe said the department is working with county IT to load demolition data into Tableau to make the information sortable and filterable and estimated the website would be online in about a month. He said the one‑year window required by relevant legislative processes for authorizing demolition informed the department’s priority to move forward first on parcels closest to procurement.
Council members thanked staff for the presentation and were told that additional questions could be handled offline. The council suspended the rules to hear the report by motion and approved that motion before the presentation.
