Resident questions canceled parade as board thanks volunteers for Vernon Hills Days

A Vernon Hills resident questioned the board July 22 about the decision to cancel the community parade, asking how many units withdrew and whether organizers could have continued with the units that remained.
An event organizer who has been planning Vernon Hills Days for more than a year said torrential rains and lightning in the area led staff and public-safety partners to delay the start and then cancel when paid entertainers and many parade units left for safety and scheduling reasons. “...there were torrential rains and there was lightning seen in the area,” the organizer said, explaining that performers and convertibles carrying VIPs departed, leaving only a small group and making a parade impractical.
Later in the meeting, board members repeatedly thanked volunteers, the Vernon Hills Park District, police, public works and sponsors — including Rust-Oleum, Murray Weiner of Entertainment Management Group and Howard Wall of A to Z Entertainment — for a successful Vernon Hills Days festival and fireworks display.
The board noted the event will be planned again next year and signaled appreciation to those who helped execute this year’s program.
