Residents press Vernon Hills board on intersection safety, apartment habitability and a new run club

Multiple residents used the public-comment period at the June 17 Vernon Hills Village Board meeting to raise neighborhood concerns and community initiatives.
Jane Braun, who identified herself as living on Southwick Court near Big Bear Lake, urged the board to address a four-way conflict at a multi-leg intersection on Lakeview Parkway (where Coventry Circle and Museum Boulevard intersect). "This is a dragway. There are people racing down here… If you put up a camera, you would see 40 miles, 50 miles, 60 miles," Braun said, describing two accidents she had witnessed and urging additional stop signs and crosswalk safety measures.
President Cook and Director Moneta acknowledged the complaint and said staff would look into the location; Moneta noted no current study was underway but offered to review the intersection after the resident left materials with staff.
Pablo Acosta, a tenant who said he lives at 780 Court of Birch, described persistent roach infestation, repeated but inadequate landlord responses, a malfunctioning apartment door lock and building doors without working locks. "Both the front and back doors of the building do not have working locks, which means anyone can walk on and off the street at any time. That puts every tenant in the building at risk," Acosta said. Community Development Director Andrew Jennings asked for his contact information and offered to have an inspector follow up.
Arif Sheth, a Vernon Hills High School student, introduced Rise and Run, a volunteer-run community running club that meets Sundays at Lake Charles Park from 8:30–9:45 a.m. He said the club has drawn more than 25 participants per meetup and includes walk/jog, intermediate and experienced groups. "It's a community driven run club here in Vernon Hills… We meet every single Sunday from 08:30 to around 09:45AM over at Lake Charles Park," Sheth said.
Board members thanked the participants, praised youth engagement and noted prior and ongoing safety and code-enforcement efforts. Staff follow-up actions included an offer from Community Development to inspect Acosta’s building and a staff commitment to review the flagged intersection.
