The Village of Vernon Hills on Tuesday presented a proclamation honoring Pete Nielsen for 45 years and 10 months of service with the Public Works Department.
The proclamation, read by the village president, credited Nielsen with coordinating maintenance contracts, overseeing budget items and acting as a hands‑on crew leader for the streets division. "Pete also proudly served as a snowfighter," the president said, noting Nielsen logged more than 100,000 miles operating snowplows during his career.
David Brown, retired public works director, told the board Nielsen "represents not just the department but the village" and praised his institutional knowledge, tracing work back to Vernon Hills' early development. Nielsen said he enjoyed his time with the village and thanked staff and residents.
The board presented Nielsen with the proclamation and photos, and trustees and residents offered brief remarks and appreciation. No formal action was required; the recognition was ceremonial.
