Bill to clarify laser hair removal rules gets first hearing

Vice Chair Dieter presented sponsor testimony for House Bill 377 at its first hearing, saying the bill modernizes Ohio law governing laser hair removal and resolves inconsistencies left after the 2021 removal of the cosmetic therapist license.
Dieter said HB 377 would establish "laser hair removal professionals," clarify that an in-person meeting requirement for initial treatment applies only to these professionals, adjust supervision ratios so a physician may supervise up to five laser professionals and up to five nurses at one time, permit off-site supervision for nurses who complete approved training, and update technical definitions and a wavelength standard for light-based medical devices. "This legislation does not expand the scope of practice, but instead clarifies and streamlines existing law," Dieter told the committee.
Committee members had no additional questions during the first hearing, and Chair Schmidt closed the item without further action. The sponsor said stakeholder meetings shaped the bill and that he will continue to work with interested parties as the legislation moves through the process.
