The Newport News City Council approved a $660,000 appropriation on Sept. 23 to fund traffic-signal and pedestrian-safety improvements at Briarfield Road and Marshall Avenue.
City staff said the project will upgrade an existing span-wire traffic signal system to a mast-arm signal and add pedestrian-improvement features. The funding comes from FY2026 bond authorization under the streets and bridges category.
During the meeting, a councilmember who spoke during the appropriations item said they hoped the improvements would "definitely make things safer over there for the typically for those, young people who are at Heritage High School as they are moving around and going to school and back to the buses in the area." The council approved the appropriation 6-0.
