A resident of Legacy Landing described serious, ongoing maintenance problems during the public-comment period of the Newport News City Council meeting on July 22. The resident said she moved into Legacy Landing nearly two years earlier and recounted repeated failures including ceiling leaks, a stove that was not working for 22 days, air-conditioning breakdowns and flooding in common areas.
"Stove not working for 22 days," the resident said, describing days without reliable cooking appliances and repeated water intrusion. She asked the council to hold developers and management accountable and said she would seek legal advice if necessary.
In response, Ms. Shaw (first referenced during council remarks) said she has been in contact with the executive director and will meet weekly with the developer and the property management team to address the numerous problems, including air-conditioning failures and power loss. Ms. Shaw said the meetings will be a staff-led effort to resolve issues raised by multiple residents.
The council did not take formal enforcement action on the record at that meeting; the resident asked for accountability and staff committed to ongoing meetings with the developer and manager.
What to watch for Follow-up items to expect include: staff reports to council on the status of weekly meetings, corrective actions taken by the developer or property manager, any code-enforcement notices or referrals to the city attorney, and updates on habitability fixes for affected units.
Quoted from the meeting Resident: "Stove not working for 22 days." Ms. Shaw: "What Ms. Shaw will be doing is meeting with the developers and the management team weekly to be able to solve all of these problems because they are too numerous."
