Commission OKs Civic Center repairs; county staff outline DCA homeowner-rehab funds and upcoming millage work

Lowndes County commissioners approved a low bid from Kellerman Construction for repairs to the Lowndes County Civic Center following damage from Hurricane Helene. Staff said the work includes replacing remaining roof panels, installing metal purlins and new metal roofing, removing the remaining drop ceiling, installing insulation and repairing damaged lots; the low bid was $318,030. Staff explained that insurance adjusters will reconcile final payment amounts after bids are received and some costs may be adjusted in coordination with FEMA where applicable.
County Manager Miss Dukes reported staff will meet with Second Harvest to assess the effects of recent federal changes on local nonprofits and highlighted a 'Made in Lowndes' vendor market to support small businesses. Dukes also said the county will set its millage rate at the next meeting after the school board sets its rate on Aug. 25; county staff will provide additional information before the Aug. 26 meeting. She also outlined new rules from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for a homeowner rehabilitation and reconstruction program tied to recent storms, noting the statewide allocation at about $265,000,000 and that Lowndes County staff will help residents through applications and program requirements.
Dukes asked residents to direct constituent questions about the program to county staff; department heads will be briefed and outreach is planned to assist eligible homeowners.
