South Huntington Board Approves 2025-26 Tax Levy, Reviews Facilities and Programs

The South Huntington Union Free School District Board of Education on Sept. 16 approved the tax levy for the 2025-26 school year and took several other actions, Board President Nicholas Ciapetta said in a meeting recap.
Ciapetta said the district's tax rate "came in lower than anticipated," a result he described as favorable to taxpayers. The board approved the levy but the recap did not include a roll-call vote tally or the motion text.
The board also approved participation in the Foster Grandparent Program for the 2025-26 school year and approved renaming district spaces at Silas Wood as the Silas Wood Pre-Kindergarten Center and the Memorial Sixth Grade Center.
In presentations, the district highlighted facilities work across schools: Oakwood and Burtchwood outdoor learning centers; interior renovations at Memorial; improvements at Wildcat Stadium in Turffield; the Walden High School media center; parking improvements at the James Cade Administrative Office; and a new traffic light at Walden High School.
Ciapetta noted the district's summer 2025 programs drew 3,684 registrations. He also recognized Michael Eastwood, a Wahlgren High School junior, for an Eagle Scout bench beautification project at the Wahlgren Performing Arts Center and praised Boy Scout Troop 218 for a flag-collection and proper-disposal initiative at Stimson Middle School.
On regionalization, Ciapetta said the district will submit a proposal with the other participating Western Southern BOCES on Oct. 1 and stressed the district retains the option to opt out of regionalization at a later step.
The recap did not include vote tallies, motion language, or additional staff reports; Ciapetta closed by thanking the community and saying, "be well and go Wildcats."
