District outlines major facilities projects: Memorial renovation, outdoor learning centers, stadium work and upgrades

Ken Costin and Dennis Martin presented a multi-site facilities and capital‑projects update to the board, noting the district manages roughly a million square feet of building space and about 172 acres of fields. They said many buildings date to the 1950s–1960s and described completed work and upcoming projects.
Highlights included: completed science-room renovations at Walt Whitman High School; plans to break ground on Oakwood and Birchwood outdoor learning centers this fall with completion targeted before the winter break; multiple Memorial building renovations (including flooring, casework, new classroom HVAC split units and kitchen rebuilds); the Walt Whitman stadium project (turf installation, wildcat inlay, a plinth for a bronze wildcat statue and a buried time capsule); and a proposed traffic-signal installation at the Walt Whitman driveway pending town traffic-study approval.
Facilities staff discussed in‑house craftsmanship and preventative maintenance: the district installs split‑unit ACs, replaces exhaust fans (about 66 exhaust fans at the high school and approximately 240 across the district), and plans a phased rollout of new classroom display boards. Management noted a cafeteria equipment install target of Oct. 4 and cited a $250,000 grant to support a Whitman media center and production studio.
Board members thanked the facilities team for extensive summer work and asked for tours and periodic updates as projects progress.
