Board of Education President Nicholas Yapena said the South Huntington Union Free School District Board of Education on Sept. 3 approved attendance by board members at the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association annual conference and authorized the district clerk to attend related budget-process training.
"We approved a number of conferences, including the Nassau Suffolk School Boards Association annual conference, which will allow board members to attend and learn about advocacy and policies, and the district clerk to attend the conference, learning about the intricacies of this year's budget process and important information involving New York State Department of Education," Yapena said.
The board did not present other items before moving into routine business because the academic year began early, Yapena said. He framed the approvals as part of the district's effort to ensure board members and staff receive up-to-date information on advocacy, policy and the state budget process.
Details the board did not specify in his recap include which board members will attend, whether the district will cover travel or registration costs, and the vote tally for the approvals. Yapena directed attention to professional development and to learning about requirements involving the New York State Department of Education as the reason for the district clerk's training.
The board is scheduled to meet next on Sept. 16.
