South Huntington students, Troop 218 recognized for community flag‑retirement program

The board recognized a collaborative program at Stimson Middle School and Troop 218 that collected and properly retired more than 50 worn flags in the week leading up to Memorial Day. Principal Mike Duggan described the project’s schoolwide planning and student involvement; student Jay Gonsolin said the U.S. Flag Code calls for dignified disposal when a flag is no longer serviceable and explained the proper folding and retirement process.
Volunteer and troop leader Keith Consul (1994 Eagle Scout, retired Navy master chief) described participating in the retirement ceremony and said the troop sorted cotton flags for burning and routed nylon flags to the VFW or American Legion for proper disposal. AJ Demarest, a troop member, described fabricating a decommissioning grate and the safety measures used at the retirement site.
The board presented tokens of appreciation and invited students to be photographed with board members and district leaders. Administrators said the collection box will remain in the building lobby and the district will continue to publicize the community collection option.
