Michael Eastwood, a junior at Walt Whitman High School, told the South Huntington Board of Education he plans to build three new benches and refurbish three existing benches at the Performing Arts Center entrance as his Eagle Scout project. He said two new benches would sit on the grassy side of the entrance and a third on the gravel side, and he will stencil the wildcat logo onto all six benches.
"My Eagle Scout project focuses on beautifying the main entrance of Walt Whitman High School's Performing Arts Center," Eastwood said, describing sketches of the benches and a plan to clear weeds from nearby garden beds. He told the board he will seek community donations and troop fundraising — including a planned car wash — to pay for materials.
Board members and administrators praised the presentation. Facilities staff and the board encouraged Eastwood to coordinate fundraising dates with Dr. Murphy for district publicity. One board member called the presentation "very well presented" and the board offered congratulations and token appreciation during student recognition.
Next steps: Eastwood said he will schedule fundraising and coordinate with district staff; no formal board vote was required for the informational presentation.
