Canutillo ISD trustees republish hearing and adopt 2025–26 tax rate amid public notice fix
Summary
After republishing a public notice because of a technical error, trustees approved a maintenance rate of 0.7525 and a debt service rate of 0.40 per $100 valuation (combined 1.1525), with administration saying the change reflects district revenue needs and not an immediate tax increase for all homeowners.

The board held a republished public hearing on the district’s proposed 2025–26 property tax rate after staff identified a publication technical error in the initial notice.
Finance presenter Christie Cooley explained the two components of the tax rate: maintenance and operations (M&O) and interest and sinking (debt service). Cooley said certified values for the tax year totaled about $3.7 billion and that the district’s compressed M&O rate would decrease slightly due to property value changes; she also explained why the district republished the notice to remain within legal requirements.
Trustees moved to adopt the maintenance and operations tax rate at 0.7525 per $100 valuation and separately to adopt a debt‑service rate of 0.40 per $100 valuation. Following motions, the board passed a resolution adopting a combined tax rate of 1.1525 per $100 valuation as presented by administration; trustees debated whether lower debt service rates were preferable, but the resolution passed with a majority vote.
Administration told the board the average homeowner could see a net decrease in property taxes in part because of projected changes to homestead exemptions that may be voted by the state or posted by county assessors; Cooley said the district’s published calculations incorporate those values as requested by tax assessors. Trustees asked follow‑up questions about the publication schedule, the cost of republication and legal posting requirements; staff said the republication cost was about $700.
Outcome: Board approved the M&O rate (0.7525), the debt‑service rate (0.40) and adopted the combined tax rate (1.1525) by standard motion and vote.
