County approves change orders to finish counseling facility and extends completion date on public works building

Sweetwater County commissioners approved two construction-related change orders on Aug. 19: one to complete site work on the Southwest Counseling Jonah Facility and another to extend the schedule for the county’s combined public-works facility.
Public Works Director Gene Magerski explained the Jonah Facility contract was reduced earlier to fit grant limitations. To complete paving, concrete and site work the county will add a change order for $330,000: the project will fully expend the grant and the county will contribute $80,000 of county funds to finish required site elements so the facility can be occupied.
Magerski also said the Public Works combined facility encountered unforeseen remodel issues that required additional contractor/architect time. The board approved a time-only change order to move substantial completion from Aug. 15, 2025 to Sept. 24, 2025; staff indicated Building E (main building) should reach substantial completion soon while other areas still require work.
Both change orders were approved unanimously. Magerski said the Jonah Facility will be a valuable local resource once finished and that the county used the change-order process to capture accumulated time impacts rather than amend the contract repeatedly during construction.
