Sweetwater County commissioners on Sept. 2 approved amendments to the county’s benefits plan and set premium rates for 2026 after a presentation by HR Director Gary McLean and consultant Chris Merrill of IMA.
McLean told commissioners open enrollment will be in late October and summarized plan performance: the county posted a favorable loss ratio this year (about 78% through the most recent reporting period), aided by unusually low numbers of large claims. Merrill said medical-trend pressures remain high (11–16%) and prescription trends are rising faster, but the county’s plan performance justified a measured 5% premium increase for medical coverage and a 5% increase for dental while leaving vision rates flat.
Commissioners also approved an amendment to the Summary Plan Description (SPD) so that small, local mental-health providers who are not formally in a carrier network would be reimbursed at the same level as in-network providers. McLean said the change is intended to improve access in rural areas where many providers are one- or two-person practices. The amendments and the rate schedule were approved unanimously and staff were authorized to implement enrollment communications and administer the SPD change.
