The Greenlee County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 19 voted to appoint Mindy Cleridge as Justice of the Peace 2, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Karen Smith.
By procedural background, staff explained the board has authority to appoint a successor and that Smith had recommended Cleridge. Speaker 4 moved to appoint Mindy Cleridge, Speaker 5 seconded, and the board approved the motion by voice vote. The appointment is effective at the close of business on Sept. 4, 2025, as stated in the motion.
Board members praised Smith’s 20 years of county service at a separate recognition earlier in the meeting. The appointment process used the nominee recommended by the retiring justice; no additional interview process was recorded in the meeting minutes.
