Greenlee County supervisors authorized the sheriff to solicit bids to replace aging Connex units with a 40x60 metal building and offices using funds in the county's 207 account and designated sheriff marijuana-tax allocations; sewer and restroom capacity remain to be resolved before construction.
The Greenlee County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 19 authorized Sheriff Eric Ellison to solicit bids for a permanent evidence room and office building at the sheriff’s office using existing grant and county funds.
Ellison told the board the current Connex storage and modular office units are full and located over a gas main; Southwest Gas flagged a right-of-way issue. He proposed constructing a 40-by-60 concrete pad and metal building with internal offices near the sheriff's office and said funding would come from the county’s account referred to in the meeting as the "207 account" and a portion of sheriff-designated marijuana sales-tax allocations. "We're gonna modernize the sheriff's office," Ellison said, adding that the county would not have to expend general-fund dollars for the project.
Board members asked about site logistics and utilities. Ellison said the planned location is within the existing compound near the cell tower and that restroom and sewer capacity are unresolved: "We’re gonna cross that road when we get there," he said, and staff responded they would examine sewer-line capacity before construction.
Speaker 4 moved to grant the sheriff permission to seek bids for construction; Speaker 5 seconded and the board approved the motion by voice vote.
Ellison said the county will return the existing Connex boxes for other uses (such as the county fair) so they are not wasted. The board approved the request to seek bids; final construction authorization will follow review of bids and utility assessments.
