The Northfield Select Board on Aug. 26 approved two warrants after board members pressed staff for details about vehicle costs and project charges.
The board moved to approve warrant 04‑26 totaling $822,123.72. A member flagged about $34,000 in vehicle invoices and asked whether the expense was maintenance or a sign of broader fleet failures. Town staff explained several older Dodge trucks and larger vehicles are experiencing mechanical problems; replacements are planned for next fiscal year and some invoices arose from June work that will be charged to the new budget year.
The board also discussed sidewalk and pedestrian-project line items, including a Wall Street pedestrian-improvement grant and TAPCO flashing beacon entries. A board member asked whether those items were part of grants; staff confirmed the flashing beacons were grant-related and that grant and state approvals help limit local cost exposure.
A separate motion approved the weekly payroll warrant of $123,684.83.
Why it matters: Vehicle maintenance and unplanned fleet repairs can affect highway and maintenance budgets and influence capital‑purchase timing. Board members requested clearer change‑order and invoice breakouts in future packets so the public and board can track project financial impacts.
What’s next: Staff will provide detail on large invoices and a schedule for vehicle replacements as part of the next budget planning cycle.
